This page covers [yoursite.com] (replace with your actual domain), a campground directory and trip-planning site. It's written to be read, not to cover anyone in legalese.
Note before you publish this: this is a starting draft, not legal advice. Fill in the bracketed placeholders (domain, contact, country), and it's worth a quick pass by an actual lawyer before this goes live, especially once you have real users' photos, reviews and location data on the site.
What this site stores about you
Unlike a browser-only tool, this site has real accounts and a real database, because trip planning, reviews and favorites need to persist and be shareable. Here's exactly what that means:
If you create an account:
- Your name, email address, and a securely hashed password (we never store or can see your actual password — see Security, below). Your email is used to verify your account when you sign up and for account-related messages — we don't use it for marketing without separate consent
- Your trust level and submission history (used to decide whether your reviews/photos need admin approval)
If you use the site's features:
- Campgrounds you favorite
- Reviews you write, including star ratings and any photos you attach
- Trips you create — trip name, the campsites and dates in it, and stop order
- Private campgrounds you add — the name, location and any notes or photos you attach. These are stored on our servers like any other content, and are not shown to other users or in public search. "Private" means not published — it does not mean encrypted or invisible to us: administrators can access a private site where necessary to investigate a report or comply with a legal obligation, and that access is logged. Anything you share a link to, or include in a trip you share, becomes visible to whoever holds that link
- "Helpful" votes you give to other people's reviews
What we don't collect: payment details (there's no in-house booking or payment on this site), precise real-time location unless you explicitly enable it for map search, or anything from you if you're just browsing without an account.
Where your data lives
Your account and content data is stored in a database we manage, hosted by our database provider. Uploaded photos are stored on our hosting infrastructure. None of this is stored on your device the way it would be for a browser-only tool — deleting your browser's cache or cookies won't delete your account or your reviews. To delete your data, delete your account or contact us (see Your rights, below).
Cookies and local storage
- Session cookie: when you log in, a secure, httpOnly cookie keeps you signed in. This is required for the site to function and isn't used for tracking.
- Theme preference: your light/dark mode choice is saved in your browser's local storage so it's remembered on your next visit. This never leaves your device.
Hosting and server logs
The site is served by our hosting provider. Like any web host, it processes the technical details a request needs in order to be answered — your IP address, the page requested, your browser's user agent, and the time — and uses them to deliver the page and to protect against abuse and attack (including rate-limiting). This is standard infrastructure logging, not analytics about you, and it is not used to build a profile.
Maps and routing
Campground maps use OpenStreetMap map tiles, and trip distance/route calculations use a routing service (OSRM). Loading a map or calculating a route sends the relevant coordinates to these services in order to draw the map or compute the route — this is limited to the campsite locations involved, not your personal identity, and these services are standard map/routing infrastructure rather than tracking or advertising services.
Advertising
No advertising is running on this site today, and no third-party advertising script is loaded. If that changes, this section will be updated first with what's enabled and what it means for your data — including cookie use and any opt-out options — before it goes live.
Analytics
There is no analytics or tracking script on this site beyond the standard hosting logs described above. If one is ever added, it will be named here first.
Public content
Reviews, campground photos, and shared trip links you create are, once approved, visible to other visitors — that's the point of a directory and review site. Your display name is shown alongside your reviews. If you'd rather not have something public, you can delete your own reviews/photos at any time, or make a trip private instead of sharing its link.
Security
Account passwords are hashed and never stored in a form anyone — including us — can read back. We follow standard practices to protect your data (input validation, access controls so users can only edit their own content, secure sessions). No system is perfectly secure, but we treat this seriously and would tell you if something went wrong that affected your data.
Children
This site is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from them.
Your rights
This site is run from [your country] and handles personal information in line with [applicable law, e.g. the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth)]. You can ask to access, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you — in most cases this is just your account data, reviews, photos, and trips, since there's no hidden data collection beyond what's described above. To do this, delete content yourself in your account settings, or contact us at [contact email].
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters — particularly what's collected, stored, or shared — the date at the top will change with it, and material changes will be flagged to logged-in users.
